WHERE: Presentations in room 123, Scott Hall, and mineral sale in room 135, Scott Hall, 43 College Ave., New Brunswick. Rock and mineral identification in room 202, Geology Hall, 85 Somerset St., New Brunswick.

BACKGROUND: The Geology Museum at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, will hold its 39th annual open house. The following general-interest presentations about contemporary research are scheduled:

Underwater ocean observatory in the Hudson: A prototype that will change oceanography. Scott Glenn, professor of marine and coastal sciences at Rutgers. 10 a.m.

From Ice Age to greenhouse: What past climates can tell us about future climate change. Anthony Broccoli, professor of environmental sciences at Rutgers. 11 a.m.

What happened to Pluto? Guy Consolmagno, Vatican Observatory, Vatican City, and Fordham University, Bronx, N.Y. 2 p.m.

Should I sell my shore house? Sea-level changes in New Jersey. Ken Miller, professor and chair of geological sciences at Rutgers. 3 p.m.

In addition, there will be a mineral sale and a rock and mineral identification program; participants may bring in their own samples for professional examination.

The Rutgers Geology Museum open house was started in 1968 as part of the museum's efforts to make the earth sciences accessible to students, scholars and the public. Educators who attend the museum's presentations can receive credit toward their professional development requirements.
