New Jersey-based Indian dance company comes to Rutgers-Newark
Surati for the Performing Arts, a New-Jersey based dance company that offers training in Indian classical, traditional folk, and contemporary dance and music, will perform in Newark October 11.

The Institute on Ethnicity, Culture, and the Modern Experience will showcase the richness and complexity of Indian dance in an October 11 concert on the Newark campus. The performance, “From Bharatnatyam to Bollywood: A Tapestry of Indian Dance,” will take place 7:30 p.m. at the Bradley Hall Theater. Surati for Performing Arts, a New Jersey-based performing arts company, will present variety of dances under the artistic direction and choreography of founder Rimli Roy who will also perform. The concert is free and open to the public. The Surati dance concert will illuminate the rich array of Indian dance, showcasing traditional Indian classical dances as well as creative, folk, and contemporary dances. The contemporary style dances will include some Bollywood – what Surati calls “Classic Bollywood” – which incorporates dances with popular Bollywood tunes, many considered to be classics. The other Bollywood style that Surati performs and teaches is “Express Bollywood,” similar to the fast-paced Bollywood moves of present day. The program will be followed by a reception of Indian appetizers in the theater lobby, provided by The Village Fine Indian Cuisine restaurant in Jersey City.
