Design Teams to Present Concepts for College Avenue Campus

Five internationally renowned design teams will present their concepts to the public Monday, October 30, at 7 p.m. in the Rutgers Student Center Multipurpose Room, College Avenue Campus. Following the presentations, the audience will have an opportunity to ask questions of the design teams.
A public forum on the design concepts and the overall initiative will take place Thursday, November 16, at 7 p.m. in the College Avenue Gym, 130 College Ave., New Brunswick.For more information, click here.
School of Law–Newark hosts national summit on Cuba
Critical questions about the future of Cuba, U.S. foreign policy towards the island and the role of the Cuban-American community will be addressed when the School of Law–Newark, in conjunction with the World Policy Institute at the New School, holds the “National Summit on Cuba: New Jersey, 2006” from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, October 28, at the Center for Law and Justice, 123 Washington St., Newark.
The summit, held in a different major city each year, will feature keynote addresses by New Jersey elected officials who help shape national policy toward Cuba; five panel sessions with expert speakers representing a diversity of opinion on the island, with audience Q&A after each session and Rutgers law faculty serving as moderators; and the New Jersey premiere of “Those I Left Behind,” a documentary by Cuban-American filmmaker Lisandro Perez-Rey, who will introduce the film.

Student Life Conference
The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs is hosting the 10th Annual Student Life Conference at the Busch Campus Center Friday, November 17. The theme this year is "Learning in Communities." The program will include a general session in the morning, lunch, and breakout panels in the afternoon followed by a closing session.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Lee Williams, Dean of Students at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Williams is a leading expert on living and learning communities, residential colleges, and academic and student affairs partnerships.

Noontime concert series in Camden
Set lunchtime to music with a free concert series Wednesdays through December on the Camden campus.
The concert series features flutist Adeline Tomasone November 1; and pianist Reiko Aiazawa and violinist Jesse Mills playing the music of Brahms November 8. Soprano Julianne Baird, a professor of music in Camden, will direct the Rutgers–Camden Madrigal Singers in a performance of Henry Purcell’s opera “Dido and Aeneas” December 6 and December 13.
All performances take place in the Mallery Room, on the second floor of the Fine Arts Complex.

College of Nursing hosts conference on responding to a natural disaster Nov. 3
Michael S. Beeman, national preparedness division director and acting director for response and recovery division for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region II, will speak at the Third Annual Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases. The conference will be held at the Somerset Marriott Friday, November 3, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“Recent events such as the Tsunami in Indonesia and Hurricane Katrina have challenged health care professionals with extraordinary demands for services,” said Felissa R. Lashley, dean and professor at the College of Nursing and interim director of the Nursing Center for Bioterrorism and Emerging Infectious Diseases Preparedness, which is co-sponsoring the event with the Center for Professional Development at the College of Nursing. “This conference will present personal experiences and “give us insight in how to better prepare for any future natural disasters.”
Other event speakers include Joy Spellman, director and principal investigator, Center for Public Health Preparedness; Betsy Todd, nurse epidemiologist, New York Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University Medical Center; and Doris G. Brown, deputy assistant secretary and center director for community preparedness, Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, who oversaw the shelters for the Hurricane Katrina victims.
