Paul Robeson Galleries and Newark Public Library to cohost fine print exhibition

November 14, 2007 through January 12, 2008

Newark Public Library
5 Washington Street
Newark

November 8, 2007 through January 24, 2008

Paul Robeson Galleries
350 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard

The Newark Public Library and the Paul Robeson Galleries at Rutgers–Newark collaboratively present concurrent exhibitions showcasing hundreds of prints, both historic and contemporary, from Dürer and Goya to Audubon and Picasso and Warhol, many on display for the first time ever.

“The World in Prints: An International Survey of Graphic Arts, Contemporary and Historic” – jointly curated by William Dane, the library’s keeper of the prints, and Jorge Daniel Veneciano, director of the Paul Robeson Galleries – includes graphic works carefully selected from the library’s outstanding collection of works of art on paper.  Each print was created and signed by the artist and in some cases, titled and dated. While the library exhibit embraces the historical progression of printmaking, the Robeson Galleries selection covers 20th-century prints, emphasizing works by contemporary artists.

Both exhibitions are open during regular business hours at their respective institutions.  Two opening receptions are planned: November 14 in the library’s Centennial Hall, and November 15 in Paul Robeson Galleries, Paul Robeson Campus Center on the Newark Campus.

The exhibitions and the receptions are free and open to the public. For more information or to arrange a group tour, please call the gallery at 973-353-1610; directions are at http://andromeda.rutgers.edu/artgallery.

Changing identity: Recent works by women artists from Vietnam

Through November 21, 2007 Stedman - Vietnamese art

Stedman Gallery
Rutgers–Camden Center for the Arts
314 Linden Street
Camden

Since Vietnam opened its doors to the west, a booming art business has brought economic prosperity to many artists – predominantly men. Vietnamese women, long stereotyped as living in the shadows of their husbands, have been virtually overlooked by the international art world. Now, a younger generation of women find themselves in position to critique prevailing norms and to question the status quo. Changing Identity is the first survey of its kind to tour the United States, featuring the work of 10 Vietnamese women breaking barriers and presenting a fresh, unique perspective on Vietnamese culture.

The Stedman Gallery is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
