Gearing up for RecycleMania 2008, and looking for help

recyclemaniaLast year, the Rutgers community helped recycle more than 2.7 million pounds of waste, bringing the university a first-place prize in the 2007 RecycleMania competition, a friendly 10-week competition among colleges and universities to see which institutions can recycle the most materials.

Rutgers also placed second in the 2007 grand champion competition with a recycling rate of 57 percent. This year, Rutgers can best last year's grand champion - Cal State San Marcos - but only with your help.

Recycling gurus at Rutgers want everyone to fill out this survey, asking how they can specifically help spread the word about RecycleMania and seeking ideas about how to get more people in the Rutgers community to recycle more materials, more often.

The 2.7 million pounds of waste brought Rutgers the “Gorilla Prize” for the most cumulative pounds of recyclables. The closest contender, Stanford University, recycled only half Rutgers’ amount.

Rutgers also placed first for recycling the most food and organic material per person, second for recycling the most bottles and cans per person, and third for recycling the most corrugated cardboard per person.
