Rutgers president announces sweeping plan to strengthen alumni relations

Declaring that strong bonds with passionate, loyal, and engaged alumni are essential to Rutgers’ future, President Richard L. McCormick announced a sweeping plan to strengthen and enhance the relationship between the university and its 362,000 alumni worldwide.

The president’s plan, endorsed by the Rutgers Board of Governors at its December 6 meeting, reflects a comprehensive set of recommendations developed by the Task Force on Alumni Relations, together with input from a series of public forums held this fall.

LEARNING THE TOOLS OF THE TRADE Twenty students traveling to Louisiana next month to build homes for Hurricane Katrina victims with Habitat for Humanity arrived at 77 Street 1603 – Chris Small's carpentry shop on the Livingston Campus – and shed their jackets, scarves, and knit gloves. They donned thick work gloves and safety glasses that resembled sporting eyewear, with a cool red and silver tint. Then they worked with facilities staff who taught them how to build and erect wall frames, run electrical wire, saw and nail wood planks, and carry sheetrock in the proper manner. Emma O'Flanagan, the only female Rutgers University Police Department patrol officer to work the 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. shift, is not afraid to break the rules. The 23-year-old was the only female EMT at her high school and one of only three women in her class at the Somerset County Police Academy.
