A visit by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education March 9 through 12 marks the culmination of 18 months of intensive self-study focused on undergraduate education. You are encouraged to read the report at middlestates.rutgers.edu, and you are invited to share your observations and comments with members of the Middle States team at these open meetings.
State Senate to hold hearings on Governor Corzine's recent budget proposal

The Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee will hold a public hearing on the New Jersey fiscal year 2009 budget on Wednesday, March 12, from 9 a.m.to 6 p.m. at the Rutgers Student Center.
Members of the university community must register to testify at the public hearing, which will be led by state Sen. Barbara Buono, chairperson of the budget committee.
To register online to testify, fill out the Senate Public Hearing Selection Form and follow the steps to complete your registration. You may also fax your registration form to 609-777-2442. If you wish to register by telephone, contact the Legislative Budget and Finance Office at 609-984-6798. For other questions and inquiries, call 609-292-8030.
Members of the public may also fax their testimony to the Rutgers Student Center at 732-932-7996. The subject line should read: Senate Budget Hearing.
Rutgers–Camden celebrates Women’s History Month with a diverse series of free lectures

Cindy Lobel, an assistant professor of history at Lehman College, will discuss “Of Dining Tables and Delmonico’s: Gender and Consumption in 19th-Century New York City.” Lobel is the author of the forthcoming book The Appetite of the Metropolis: Food, Eating, and the Rise of a Consumer Culture in New York City, 1750–1870. Complimentary lunch will be provided.

Jenny Kehl, an assistant professor of political science at Rutgers–Camden, will discuss “Women and Work in India: The Wide Variation in Modern Opportunities, Incentives, and Constraints.” Kehl’s research has been published in the journals Political Science and Politics, Millennium, and the Journal of African Political Science and International Relations. Charlotte Markey, an assistant professor of psychology at Rutgers–Camden, will discuss “Body Image, Cosmetic Surgery, and TV: A Look at the Desire for Self-Change.” Markey’s research on gender and body image has been published in numerous scholarly journals. Complimentary lunch will be provided.

Douglass Residential College will host the “Women in the Era of Globalization: Women in Business” daylong symposium and the 2008 L’Hommedieu Lecture.
The symposium will focus on women and business, and includes sessions on microcredit, social entrepreneurship, negotiation, and women in small business. It will culminate in a lecture by Barbara Krumsiek, one of the financial services industry’s highest-ranking female executives, titled “Advancing Women and Minorities in Business.”
Krumsiek, the chief executive and president of the Calvert Group, Ltd., investment firm for the past 11 years, created the Calvert Women’s Principles, a code of corporate conduct focusing on gender equality and women’s empowerment. A former managing director at Alliance Capital Management LP, Krumsiek has been active in domestic and international initiatives encouraging corporations to adopt sustainable business practices.
The L’Hommedieu Visiting Lecture Series, sponsored by the Associate Alumnae of Douglass College, began in 1984 through the generosity of the late Frances Bradley L’Hommedieu, a 1926 graduate.
