Former U.S. Sen. Paul Sarbanes, Clifford P. Case Professor, discusses business regulation in the 21st century

Paul Sarbanes represented Maryland in the United States Senate for 30 years until his retirement in 2007. He co-authored the 2002 Sarbanes-Oxley Act, which reformed the business world and restored public confidence in Wall Street by holding companies liable for unethical actions. His talk, “Regulating Business in the 21st Century: The Case of Sarbanes-Oxley,” will discuss that legislation.
Sarbanes received the Paul H. Douglass Ethics in Government Award and served on the Princeton University Board of Trustees from 2002 to 2006.
The Clifford P. Case Professorship honors the memory of Senator Clifford P. Case, RC'25, who served in the United States Congress for 34 years, representing the State of New Jersey. During his tenure in Congress, he was known to consistently put principle above politics.

Series examines girls, aggression, and violence
Girls are becoming increasingly more involved in violent activities, shattering stereotypes of girls as “sugar and spice and everything nice.” The speakers in this series will explore girls’ involvement in violent and aggressive activities and discuss some motives behind their actions.

“Between ‘Good’ and ‘Ghetto’: African American Girls and Inner City Violence,” featuring Nikki Jones, University of California–Santa Barbara. Jones’s book on African-American girls and inner city violence is forthcoming from Rutgers University Press’s series in childhood studies.

“Annie Gets Her Gun: Girl Soldiers in Contemporary Armed Conflicts,” featuring David Rosen, Fairleigh Dickinson University. Rosen is the author of the book Armies of the Young: Child Soldiers in War and Terrorism (Rutgers University Press, 2005).
Thursday, April 17
“The Gendered Context of Young Women’s Violence,” featuring Jody Miller, University of Missouri–St. Louis. A widely published scholar on gender and crime, Miller will draw from a contextual qualitative study to examine the nature, circumstances, and meanings of fights between girls.

Rudolph M. Bell, a professor in Rutgers’ Department of History in New Brunswick, will present “Widows in Early Modern Europe: Reconsiderations from Palermo.” The program is sponsored by the Rutgers Program in Italian Studies and the New Jersey Italian and Italian-American Heritage Commission.
A widely-acknowledged expert in numerous aspects of the Italian experience, Bell most recently co-edited (with Rutgers Professor of History Virginia Yans) Women on Their Own: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Being Single (Rutgers University Press, 2008).

“Economics as a Moral Study: Consumption, Labor, and Human Virtue,” featuring Edward Hadas, an associate editor for BreakingNews.com, a London-based financial commentary service. He also writes a daily column in The Wall Street Journal. Hadas worked for 25 years as a financial analyst for various firms, including Morgan Stanley and Putnam investments, before becoming a journalist.

“Careers in Politics and Public Service,” featuring Paul Sarbanes, former U.S. senator and Clifford Case Professor at Rutgers’ New Brunswick Campus. Sarbanes acted in the Senate for 30 years, making him the longest-serving U.S. senator in the state of Maryland’s history.

“The Challenges and Opportunities of Public Service in the 21st Century,” featuring Secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Pedro Cortes, the first Latino cabinet member elected to the position. In June 2004, Secretary Cortes was one of 40 state leaders from across the country selected to participate in the renowned Toll Fellowship Program sponsored by the Council of State Government.
Political scientist Barbara G. Salmore to discuss new edition of New Jersey Politics and Government

Barbara G. Salmore will discuss the third edition of New Jersey Politics and Government: The Suburbs Come of Age (Rutgers University Press, 2008). Salmore was dean and professor of political science at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s College at Florham from 2000 to 2006, and is former associate dean and professor of political science at Drew University.
The book originally was written with her husband, Stephen A. Salmore, a political consultant and professor emeritus of political science at Rutgers.
New Jersey Politics and Government describes the challenges New Jersey has overcome and those it continues to face, offering lessons that will help states across the country address the struggles of providing quality education, protecting the environment, improving quality of life, and accommodating a multicultural society while sustaining growth and opportunity. The revised third edition also highlights recent scandals within the government and the high profile of the governorship.
