Rutgers-led team pursues innovative healing for wounded soldiers

Rutgers is taking a leadership position in meeting the challenge of treating severely wounded war veterans.

A consortium, headed by Joachim Kohn, Board of Governors Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology in Rutgers' School of Arts and Sciences, has been awarded $42.5 million over five years to develop new products and therapies to repair battlefield injuries and help soldiers resume their lives.

The Department of Defense announced the creation of the new, federally funded institution during an April 17 briefing at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia.

ON CAPITOL HILL Twenty Rutgers students ventured to Washington, D.C., this month to lobby Congress for more federal aid. Rutgers students receive about $200 million in federal financial aid, including Pell Grants, Supplemental Equal Opportunity Grants, Work-Study, and Perkins and Direct Loans. Pell Grants alone amount to $28 million, assisting more than 10,000 of the neediest students. While the Pell Grant maximum has increased in recent years, funding for many other student aid programs has remained flat or decreased since 2000.
