Rutgers enrolls largest, most diverse class of first-year students in 30 years

Rutgers welcomed more than 7,000 first-year students universitywide last week – the most the institution has enrolled in 30 years. Preliminary figures show first-year enrollment has increased more than five percent from last year and transfer student enrollment is up 13.5 percent.

This year’s class is among the most diverse, with more than half of incoming first-year students identifying themselves as non-white. The numbers of black and Latino first-year students have increased 14 percent across the university. And about one-third of the new students are from families in which neither parent holds a four-year degree.

The 30-second spot – first aired during the September 1 Rutgers football game – is the second such effort in the university’s “Jersey Roots, Global Reach” marketing campaign. Pulitzer Prize- winning novelist Junot Diaz lent his efforts to the spot, shooting a segment at a bus stop on the Douglass Campus. Diaz made an appearance at the Rutgers Student Center September 8, reading two short stories to a packed house.   Full Story
