Rutgers President Richard L. McCormick confirmed late today that Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Robert E. Mulcahy III will step down from the post he’s held since 1998, effective December 31.

“Bob Mulcahy has provided outstanding leadership for the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics at Rutgers for a decade,” said McCormick. “The results of his work can be seen everywhere in the program. I applaud his accomplishments and his tireless efforts on behalf of our student athletes, the coaching staff, and the thousands of Rutgers fans.”

Mulcahy was the architect of an athletics program that has gained national prominence. In addition to attaining historic accomplishments on the field of play, Rutgers’ student athletes have also won recognition for their achievements in the classroom. “Bob’s successor,” said McCormick, “will build on all he has achieved.”

The president said he will act quickly, and will look nationally, to identify a new director of athletics.
