Rutgers University: A powerful economic engine across New Jersey

A new report shows that Rutgers and its faculty, staff, students, and visitors channel $3.8 billion in direct and indirect spending into the state economy – more than six times the state’s $595.3 million investment in the university.

The report, “Solutions From Rutgers,” the university’s 2009 economic impact report, is based largely on state and federal data. It details the many ways – both large and small – that Rutgers benefits New Jersey residents and enhances the state’s economic health.

A GREAT DAY, A NEW TRADITION Rutgers Day, a celebration of the university and its relationship with New Jersey, drew a diverse crowd of visitors to the New Brunswick and Piscataway campuses for nearly 400 events – ranging from a step dancing show, shown above, to poetry readings to the annual Ag Field Day and New Jersey Folk Festival. Besides giving faculty, staff, and students the opportunity to showcase their collective creativity, the day provided "people who might not ordinarily visit our campuses to get an inside glimpse of their state university and to experience its social, cultural, and intellectual vibrancy firsthand," said Rutgers President Richard L. George C. Thomas III

Faculty Q&A

George C. Thomas III of the School of Law–Newark has an M.F.A. in creative writing and practiced small-town law in Tennessee before choosing teaching and scholarship. Recently named a Board of Governors Professor of Law, Thomas is considered a leading authority on double jeopardy and confessions.

    A journey from 312 pounds to good health

     

    State Sen. Bill Baroni visited the Douglass Campus May 5  to tell the story of how he lost 120 pounds and call attention to the importance of obesity research at Rutgers and elsewhere. Baroni says he made major lifestyle changes to improve his health.  “I still identify myself as a fat person,” he said. “This is an addiction I live with every day.” Baroni said about 60 percent of state residents are overweight or obese, and Rutgers stands to be a leader in addressing health threats associated with that problem.

    Faculty honored for teaching, research, and service

     

    From groundbreaking research to dedicated public service, the many accomplishments of Rutgers faculty and other members of the universiity were honored during a May 6 ceremony at the home of President Richard L. McCormick. University Danceworks, the student touring company of Mason Gross School of the Arts, received an award for its work in New Jersey and New York, which includes bringing concerts, lectures, and workshops to a diverse population.
