Eagleton Institute invitation includes student, faculty meetings in New Brunswick and Newark

WHAT: Rutgers’ Eagleton Institute of Politics will host former U.S. Sen. George J. Mitchell as the 2015 Clifford P. Case Professor of Public Affairs. Mitchell’s free public lecture is titled, “What Are Our Choices in a Complex, Changing World?” He also will meet with students and faculty in New Brunswick and Newark. Mitchell’s book, The Negotiator, will be available for purchase and signing.

WHO: Following 15 years in the Senate (1980-95), George Mitchell (D-Maine) served as a special adviser to President Clinton on Ireland, and from 1996-2000 was the independent chair of the Northern Ireland peace talks. Under his leadership, all parties signed the Good Friday Agreement ending decades of conflict. At the request of Clinton, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestine Liberation Organization Chair Yasser Arafat, Mitchell chaired the International Fact-Finding Committee on Violence in the Middle East in 2000-01. Its recommendations (“Mitchell Report”) were endorsed by the Bush administration, the European Union and other governments. He was U.S. special envoy for Middle East peace from 2009-2011.

Mitchell also was principal investigator and author of the report bearing his name on the use of performance-enhancing drugs in baseball in 2007.

BACKGROUND: Thirty-five years ago, the Rutgers Board of Governors established the Clifford P. Case Professorship of Public Affairs to recognize Case’s 34 years representing New Jersey in Congress, during which “he consistently put principles above politics” and earned the “deserved reputation of having a profound sense of integrity.” Rutgers honors Case by bringing prominent and respected public servants to campus for one to three days for a public lecture and meetings with faculty and students.
