BACKGROUND: Nancy Pelosi was the first woman in American history to lead a major political party in Congress. She is the Democratic leader of the House of Representatives in the 113th Congress. From 2007 to 2011, she served as the first woman Speaker of the House. She has led House Democrats for a decade and has represented San Francisco, California’s 12th District, for 26 years. In October, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Seneca Falls, N.Y., the birthplace of the American women’s rights movement.             

The Center for American Women and Politics, a unit of the Eagleton Institute of Politics, is nationally recognized as the leading source of scholarly research and current data about American women’s political participation. Its mission is to promote greater knowledge and understanding about women’s participation in politics and government and to enhance women’s influence and leadership in public life.
