BACKGROUND: Richard L. McCormick has enjoyed a distinguished career as a faculty member, scholar and university administrator. Prior to becoming Rutgers 19th president in 2002, he was president of the University of Washington and before that served in leadership positions at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At Rutgers, McCormick has led a transformation of undergraduate education at its largest campus with a dramatic reshaping of academics and student life, including initiatives to enhance research opportunities for undergraduates and reconnect them with senior faculty.

The nationally syndicated program The Open Mind is the longest-running interview program on public television. It has served as a platform for many of the influential figures who have shaped our national history or inhabited the consciousness of modern America. The interviews offer the candid, often surprising and provocative opinions of the nations most creative thinkers: men and women who have dissected national politics, clarified the law, molded the media, shaped race relations, set the agenda for womens rights, explored medicine, and chronicled or created the American scene and pop culture. Richard D. Heffner, a university professor at Rutgers School of Communication, Information and Library Studies, created the program in 1956 and continues to produce and host it weekly.
