Campus activities against gender violence

WHAT: Activities commemorating the "16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence," a global campaign started by the Center for Women's Global Leadership at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, to call attention to violence against women around the world. The activities below are examples of events taking place from Nov. 25 through Dec. 10 in more than 130 nations.
WHO: Rutgers students and community members
WHEN/WHERE: Tuesday, Dec. 2, 8 p.m.: Screening of "Knowing Her Place: An Intimate Portrait of an Indian Woman in America," a film that deals with domestic violence and the story of an Indian woman who moves to the United States and is ostracized because of her culture. There will be a discussion afterward led by members of Manavi, a local organization for women with cultural ties to Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Rutgers University Women's Center, third floor, Douglass College Center, 100 George St., New Brunswick.

Friday, Dec. 5, 7 p.m.: Teach-in about globalization's effects on women, the treatment of women who work for corporations in Third World countries, and resistance methods used by women workers against corporations and globalization in light of human rights violations. Featuring Ethel Brooks, assistant professor, women's and gender studies. Sponsored by Culture Jam, a student group that uses media to combat excessive consumerism. Tuesday, Dec. 9, 8 p.m.: Ellen Fischer-Turk, a photo-therapist, will discuss her work with women who have suffered from internalized violence in the form of eating disorders and with victims of violence. Sponsored by Radigals, the undergraduate women's studies association at Rutgers. Graduate Student Lounge, 126 College Ave., New Brunswick.
