BACKGROUND: The MetroMath Center unites three major urban universities, Rutgers-New Brunswick and Rutgers-Newark; The City University of New York (CUNY)/Graduate Center; and the University of Pennsylvania, with the school districts of New York City, Philadelphia, Newark, and Plainfield, N.J. The multidisciplinary partnership includes a diverse academic faculty with specialties in mathematics, mathematics education, cognitive science, psychology, educational policy, urban studies and urban education. Funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, the center will focus on improving urban students' understanding of mathematics by:

* providing urban teachers with successful instructional strategies
* developing leadership for implementing appropriate improvements,
* enlisting the participation of the communities in which they will work, and
* developing a research-based framework for successful mathematics education in America's cities.
