Town meeting on same-sex marriage (Nov. 18)
WHAT: "Supporting All Roads to Justice: Marriage Equality in the Courts and Domestic Partnership in the Legislature," a town meeting on same-sex marriage in New Jersey, presented by Lambda Legal WHO: Featured speaker Bill Randolph, who lost his same-sex partner of 26 years, Wesley Mercer, on 9/11 WHEN: Tuesday (Nov. 18) at 7 p.m. WHERE: Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, Douglass College Center, Trayes Hall, George Street and Nichol Avenue, New Brunswick
BACKGROUND: Lambda Legal is a national organization that advocates full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, and for people with HIV or AIDS. Lambda is spearheading a series of these town meetings throughout the state. Randolph, with assistance from Lambda Legal, is seeking to obtain the financial support given automatically to surviving spouses of the 9/11 attacks. This forum is the first time a surviving lesbian or gay partner of a 9/11 victim has spoken out publicly in New Jersey.
Lambda is also representing seven same-sex New Jersey couples that sued the state to grant them full marriage rights. Couples involved in the lawsuit are slated to attend the town meeting.
Event co-sponsors at Rutgers include the Office of Diverse Community Affairs and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Concerns; the Straight and Gay Alliance of Cook College; the Bisexual/Gay/Lesbian Alliance; and Lesbian and Bisexual Womyn in Action, in conjunction with 100 other state organizations.
