Supreme Court Justice Talks at Rutgers about his Italian Roots

Italian Studies at Rutgers marks its fifth anniversary

WHAT: Italian Studies at Rutgers marks its fifth anniversary with a free lecture, “Reflections on Growing Up as an Italian American in New Jersey.” The event is open to the general public.

WHO: The lecture will be given by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito, the second Italian-American appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

On Jan. 31, 2006, Samuel A. Alito Jr. was confirmed as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Justice Alito is a native of New Jersey. He was born April 1, 1950, in Trenton, N.J. From 1987 to 1989, Justice Alito served as U. S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey. In 1990, President George H.W. Bush nominated Alito to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and he was unanimously confirmed by voice vote by the U.S. Senate.

BACKGROUND: Italian Studies at Rutgers promotes the interdisciplinary study of all areas relating to Italian and Italian-American history and culture. Italian Studies is proud to collaborate closely with the New Jersey Italian and Italian American Heritage Commission and The New Jersey Italian and Italian American Heritage Foundation, which are hosted by Rutgers University.
