Milken Institute to Discuss National Chronic Disease Study

WHAT:  Presentation on findings of a new study on national and New Jersey trends in such chronic diseases as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, stroke, mental disorders and pulmonary conditions by the Milken Institute of Santa Monica, Calif., and the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute (NJHCQI), Trenton. 
WHO: Presenters: Ross C. DeVol, director of regional economics at the Milken Institute. He has appeared on numerous national television and radio programs, including CNN’s Moneyline and NPR’s Talk of the Nation; David Knowlton, president and CEO of the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute; Carl Van Horn, professor and founding director of the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers. Van Horn is a widely recognized expert on workforce, human resources and employment policy issues with extensive experience in public and private sector policymaking.

BACKGROUND:

A second press briefing will be held Tuesday, July 29, 3 p.m., at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, located at Haddon and Vesper avenues in Camden. DeVol and Knowlton will be joined by Alexander J. Hatala, president and CEO of Catholic Health East New Jersey. He is vice chair of the board of the New Jersey Hospitals Association.

Some findings: More than 4.6 million cases of the seven cited diseases were reported in New Jersey in 2003. Pulmonary conditions affected nearly 1.3 million residents and hypertension affected more than 1.1 million residents. In 2003, the costs of these diseases were $39 billion – $7.5 billion in treatment expenditures and $31.5 billion in lost productivity.
