Noted Author Herbert Gans to Reflect on Future for New Jersey's Suburbs at Bloustein School Feb. 5

Herbert J. Gans, a Columbia University professor, urban planner and sociologist, who authored several acclaimed 1960s social commentaries, including, The Urban Villagers and The Levittowners. His presentation will be followed by a panel that includes: · William J. | BACKGROUND: |
An early critic of urban renewal policies, Gans shed new light on the realities of the suburban experience. His lecture will address problems associated with the concept of suburbs now and in the future. Specifically, he will explore how the very definition of a “suburb” has evolved since the emergence of the first Levittowns following World War II. Also, he will contemplate the future for distant, low-density suburban communities when high-priced gasoline makes it expected return. |
