July 24, 2009
EDITOR'S NOTE:

Reporters are invited to cover the Rutgers Young Scholars Program in Discrete Mathematics. Please contact Carl Blesch at 732-932-7084, ext. 616, or cblesch@ur.rutgers.edu, or Joe Blumberg at 732-932-7084, ext. 652, or blumberg@ur.rutgers.edu.

WHAT: Mathematically talented high school students are heading into the final week of a summer residential program at Rutgers University where they are learning about mathematics research and considering math-related higher education and careers.
WHO: Twenty-six high school students, mostly from New Jersey; Rutgers professors and graduate students in mathematics and computer science
WHEN: Through July 31, 2009
WHERE: Busch Campus, Rutgers University, Piscataway
BACKGROUND: While promoting programs for math and science education, President Obama noted that American 15 year olds ranked 25th in math and 21st in science when compared to other nations. The Rutgers Young Scholars Program in Discrete Mathematics is a summer program that helps mathematically talented high school students excel in their studies and encourages them to consider higher education and careers in the mathematical sciences. Students are participating in instructional sessions, career workshops, and meetings with mathematicians who are experts in their fields. They are also doing technology-based activities, including a robotics challenge. The intensive, four-week, program provides a challenging introduction to discrete mathematics – a branch of mathematical sciences encompassing such areas as logic, computer science, statistics and operations research. During the program, students develop and enhance problem-solving skills by applying mathematical concepts to a wide range of problems.
