New Counseling Center Offers Multidisciplinary Mental Health Services Under One Roof for Rutgers Students on New Brunswick Campus

Grand opening, reception and open house for the new Counseling, Alcohol and Other Drug Assistance Program and Psychiatric Services CAPS building(CAPS) building, which provides multidisciplinary mental health services for Rutgers students

WHO:

Scheduled speakers include Rutgers President Richard L. McCormick; Philip Furmanski, executive vice president for academic affairs; Gregory S. Blimling, vice president for student affairs; Dr. Melodee Lasky, executive director of Rutgers-New Brunswick Health Services; and Dr. Jill Richards, director of counseling services

BACKGROUND:   The new student counseling facility, known as the CAPS (Counseling, Alcohol and Other Drug Assistance Program, and Psychiatric Services) building, is a mental health resource center for Rutgers students on the New Brunswick Campus. The $5-million, 9,400-square-foot facility is designed to be a welcoming and safe oasis for students who choose to take advantage of psychological and psychiatric services, alcohol and drug counseling, stress management programs and meditation workshops, as well as information about community resources and referrals. The new, two-story building will serve as the central hub for services previously located in different facilities. Students continue to be served at a second location on the Cook/Douglass Campus.
