NEWARK, NJ Rutgers is one of the top five business schools in the area of Management of Technology (MOT), according to a new study published in The Journal of Product Innovation Management. The ranking is based on an assessment of the nature and quality of MOT research activities. RBS shares the first tier with Georgia Tech, MIT, Rensselaer and Stanford. Although the study did not rank schools within the same tier, Rutgers finished first on 9 of 21 metrics of quality. A total of 120 schools worldwide were ranked in the study.

RBS has an active Technology Management Research Center, which conducts applied research on all aspects of the management of technology. It focuses on the development and implementation of new technology, and delivers research findings through application oriented publications and conferences. The center also offers ongoing development programs within the MBA and PhD programs. Several faculty associated with the Center have made major contributions to the Management of Technology: George Farris, Deborah Dougherty, Fariborz Damanpour, Chao Chen, and Nancy DiTomaso.

The center is directed by Professor Farris, who was named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2002. He is editor-in-chief of IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management and past chair of the Technology and Innovation Management Division of the Academy of Management. He was cited by AAAS, the worlds largest general scientific society, for seminal contributions to the understanding of organizations and personnel practices in the furtherance of technological innovation and the management of technology.

An influential researcher in the area of interpretive and institutional barriers to innovation and building organizational capacities for sustained innovation, Doughertys current work looks at the ways in which different factors the nature of the knowledge, sophistication of the customer, and structure of the industry (regulation, intellectual property protection) affect innovation. She is also past chair of the Technology and Innovation Management Division of the Academy of Management and a senior editor of Organization Science.

Damanpours research has made important contributions to the management of innovation, organization design, and strategic management. He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Engineering and Technology Management, the Journal of Management Studies, and department editor of IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management.

Chen is an expert in cross-cultural management, reward allocation, leadership and managing diversity. He has published articles on rewards for technical professionals and the experiences of foreign born scientists working in U. S. laboratories. Chen has also conducted seminars on cross-cultural management and acted as consultant on organizational culture and diversity.

DiTomasos research specialties include the management of diversity and change, the management of knowledge-based organizations, and the management of scientists and engineers. She has co-authored and co-edited four books and many articles. DiTomaso has been elected to several national offices in various professional associations, including a position on the American Sociological Association Council, as chair of the Organizations and Occupations Section of the ASA, and president of the Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics.
