Rutgers Service-Learning Student Orientation, Volunteer Expo and Fair Set for Jan. 29
NEW BRUNSWICK/PISCATAWAY, N.J. The Rutgers Citizenship and Service Education program (CASE), now marking its 16th year, will hold its annual spring semester student orientation and volunteer expo and fair Saturday (Jan. 29).
Orientation will take place from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Rutgers Student Center, 126 College Ave. CASE Interim Director Yvette Murry and student service advocates will brief new and returning students about CASE programs, which combine academic study with community service and offer students the opportunity to learn about the value of such service while earning academic credits.
Rutgers-CASE is a nationally recognized model for colleges and universities. CASE students have been involved in community-service efforts ranging from creating Web sites and teaching in citizenship education programs to serving as docents at the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Vietnam Era Educational Center. Since the programs inception, more than 13,000 CASE volunteers have rendered more than 730,000 hours of service valued at $4 million.
The volunteer expo and fair, scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to noon, will enable students and area residents to explore nearby volunteer opportunities with about 45 nonprofit, faith-based and governmental organizations exhibiting at the event. For more information call Rivka Genesen or Lily Tanenbaum at (732) 932-8660, ext. 20, or 17, respectively, or visit the programs Web site at case.rutgers.edu.
