For Immediate Release
CAMDEN -- Voorhees resident Dennis M. Patterson, a professor at the Rutgers School of Law—Camden, has been named a Rutgers Board of Governors Professor.
This honorary professorship is awarded by Rutgers’ governing board to faculty members who display exemplary commitment to teaching, research, and service. Only a very few Rutgers faculty are chosen for this recognition.
A prominent scholar cited widely in works by professors at other law schools, Patterson was selected on the basis of his substantial research contributions in the areas of commercial law, jurisprudence, and international trade. He co-established the Rutgers Institute of Law and Philosophy, which rapidly has earned a global reputation for its focus on the intersection of these areas.
Patterson is the author of several highly regarded books, including “Law and Truth” (Oxford University Press), which has enjoyed German, Italian, and paperback editions as well as acclaim for its exploration of the integrity of law and its ability to present the truth. He also has authored or co-authored “The New Global Trading Order: The Evolving State and the Future of Trade” (Cambridge University Press, 2007) and “Good Faith and Lender Liability” (1990, Butterworths).
He has edited or co-edited numerous books and textbooks, including “Mind, Meaning and Law” (Ashgate Publishing, 2007), “Blackwell Anthology in Legal Theory” (Blackwell, 2003), and “Introduction to the Philosophy of Law” (Oxford University Press, 2003).
He is the author of revised section 1-205 of the Uniform Commercial Code. He regularly publishes his research in top scholarly journals.
In 2005, Patterson served as the Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Law at the University of Trento in Italy. He was voted “Professor of the Year” by the graduating class of 2001 at the Rutgers—Camden law school. In 1997, he received the Rutgers Board of Trustees Award for Excellence in Research.
Patterson joined the Rutgers School of Law—Camden faculty as an associate professor in 1990, and was named full professor in 1991. In 1995, he was named distinguished professor at the Rutgers—Camden law school, where he teaches courses in contracts, international law, jurisprudence, and commercial law.
He attended the University of Buffalo, where he earned his bachelor’s degree magna cum laude in 1976; his master’s degree in philosophy in 1978; and his Juris Doctor and PhD (philosophy) degrees in 1980.
