Rutgers-Camden Lecture Series Addresses the Surge in Violent Acts of Girls
CAMDEN – A free lecture series at Rutgers-Camden in April will examine current research into how girls are becoming increasingly more involved in violent activities. Prominent scholars from across the nation will address girls and inner city violence; girls as child soldiers; and how girls’ violent acts differ from that of boys.
Presented by the Rutgers-Camden Center for Children and Childhood Studies, the lecture series “Piercing the Myths: Girls, Aggression and Violence” will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Conference Room West ABC in the Campus Center. The building is located on Third Street, between Cooper Street and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge on the Rutgers-Camden campus.
On Thursday, April 3, Nikki Jones, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of California-Santa Barbara, will discuss “Between ‘Good’ and ‘Ghetto’: African American Girls and Inner City Violence.” Jones’ book on African American girls and inner city violence is forthcoming from Rutgers University Press’s series in childhood studies.
On Thursday, April 10, David Rosen, a professor of anthropology at the Becton College of Arts and Sciences at Fairleigh Dickinson University, will discuss “Annie Gets Her Gun: Girl Soldiers in Contemporary Armed Conflicts.” Rosen is the author of the book “Armies of the Young: Child Soldiers in War and Terrorism” (Rutgers University Press, 2005).
On Thursday, April 17, Jody Miller, associate professor of criminology and criminal justice at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, will discuss “The Gendered Context of Young Women’s Violence.” A widely published scholar on gender and crime, Miller will draw from a contextual qualitative study to examine the nature, circumstances, and meanings of fights between girls.
