The US Economy, Careers in Politics, and Opportunities for Public Service in the 21st Century Are Among Issues to be Discussed at Rutgers University in Newark

(Newark, NJ, March 11, 2008) – The School of Public Affairs and Administration at Rutgers University in Newark is hosting a Speakers Series with distinguished guest lecturers and political scholars on topics that range from the economy to careers in politics and challenges of public service in the 21st Century.
All talks are free and open to the public.
- April 8, 12 p.m. - 2 p.m. “Economics as A Moral Study: Consumption, Labor, and Human Virtue," featuring Edward Hadas, an associate editor for BreakingNews.com, a London-based financial commentary service. He also writes a daily column in the Wall Street Journal. Paul Robeson Campus Center, Room 226, Passaic Room, 350 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
- April 10, 12 p.m. - 2 p.m., "Careers in Politics and Public Service," featuring Paul Sarbanes, a former U.S. Senator and Clifford Case Professor at Rutgers University New Brunswick Campus. Paul Robeson Campus Center, Bergen Room, Room 257, 350 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
- April 24, 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. "The Challenges and Opportunities of Public Service in the 21st Century," featuring Pedro Cortes, Secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Paul Robeson Campus Center, Bergen Room, Room 256, 350 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Edward Hadas worked for 25 years as a financial analyst for various firms, including Morgan Stanley and Putnam investments, before becoming a journalist. He graduated from Oxford and Columbia University with degrees in philosophy, classics, and mathematics, and received an MBA from SUNY Binghamton.
Paul Sarbanes held the position of U.S. Senator of Maryland for 30 years, making him the longest-serving U.S. Senator in the state of Maryland's history. He graduated from Princeton University, attended Bailliol College in Oxford, England, as a Rhodes Scholar, and graduated from Harvard Law.
Pedro Cortes is the first Latino Cabinet member to be elected as Secretary of the Commonwealth in Pennsylvania history. In June 2004, Secretary Cortes was one of 40 state leaders from across the country selected to participate in the renowned Toll Fellowship Program sponsored by the Council of State Government.
