EDITOR'S NOTE:

ATTENTION EDUCATION, ASSIGNMENT EDITORS. FYI, the asterisk (*) is not pronounced when saying AP* Institute.

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – With competition growing fiercer each year for slots at top colleges, more high school students are taking Advanced Placement courses as a way to strengthen their applications. To help satisfy a growing need for AP teachers, Rutgers Summer Session is offering its inaugural AP* Institute, July 14 through July 18, in New Brunswick.                     The AP* Institute will offer intensive training for current or prospective teachers in English language and literature, European history, French language, Spanish language, U.S. government and politics, and U.S. history. Optional lodging at the University Inn and Conference Center, 178 Ryders Lane, New Brunswick, is available for the institute, which is endorsed by the College Board Advanced Placement Program. For information, visit www.APinstitute.rutgers.edu.

Summer Session also will offer a World Languages Institute (WLI) for teachers in grades K-12. The institute will provide World Language teachers with a graduate-level, standards-based core program in pedagogy that is taught in English, as well as graduate courses taught in Chinese, French, German, Italian, and Spanish that cover such topics as civilization, culture, grammar, linguistics, and literature. Comparative literature courses are also offered in English that are relevant for teachers of world languages.

Two World Language Institute courses, “Methods of Foreign Language Teaching (K-12)” and “Methods of Spanish Language Teaching (K-12)” are approved by the New Jersey Department of Education for New Jersey World Language teacher certification. The institute also will offer participants the opportunity to enroll in a Master of Arts for Teachers degree program that may be completed in two to three summers, enriching summer abroad experiences, and professional development summer and academic year workshops of interest to K-12 teachers.

The WLI is a registered New Jersey Professional Development Provider whose credits are applicable to the New Jersey 100-hour professional development requirement. For information on WLI, visit http://wli.rutgers.edu.

Registration for all Rutgers Summer Session courses is ongoing. Sessions run from May 27 to July 3, June 23 to Aug. 1, and July 7 to Aug. 13. To avoid late registration fees, participants should register and pay by May 16, June 13, and June 27, respectively. For more information about Summer Session, visit www.summersession.rutgers.edu.
