Sills Cummis & Gross P.C. Announces Second Charles J. Walsh Scholar at Rutgers-Newark Law School

April 28, 2008

Newark, NJ – Sills Cummis & Gross has selected Jared Heady, a first-year student at Rutgers School of Law–Newark, as the second Charles J. Walsh Scholar. In 2006, Sills Cummis & Gross established the Scholar Fund on behalf of the family, friends and colleagues of the late Judge Charles J. Walsh who, prior to his appointment to the Superior Court of New Jersey, Bergen County, was a valued Member of the Firm for 17 years. Judge Walsh was also an adjunct professor at the law school.

Mr. Heady was chosen for his academic promise, leadership qualities, and commitment to using the law to help others. Experiences in diverse environments taught him about socioeconomic inequality and shortcomings in the New Jersey justice system. "As a lawyer ― an advocate for members of society ― I will draw on my entrepreneurial and philanthropic background to drive my work, I will use my diverse experiences to justly represent the whole, and I will flourish." Mr. Heady received a B.A. in economics from Vanderbilt University in 2004. Before starting law school, he was manager of a fundraising program at Washington University in St. Louis.

The Charles J. Walsh Scholar Fund will provide financial and other assistance to Mr. Heady in the form of scholarship support, summer internship stipends, active mentorship during law school and career guidance.

Steven E. Gross, Chairman of Sills Cummis & Gross, stated: "We are pleased to have Jared Heady as our second Charles J. Walsh Scholar and take great pride in honoring Chuck's memory with this scholarship fund. It is very rewarding to encourage and support Rutgers School of Law by assisting and mentoring students such as Mr. Heady. Chuck was a mentor to many young lawyers and we feel that through this scholarship fund, his legacy continues."
