For Immediate Release
CAMDEN -- Camden resident J. William Whitlow is the recipient of the 2008 Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching at Rutgers University—Camden, where he is a professor of psychology.
In a letter of recommendation for the award, a colleague stated “I believe that Bill could be the most versatile teacher on the campus and perhaps in all of Rutgers.”
Whitlow regularly teaches undergraduate and graduate psychology students in such courses as “Experimental Psychology,” “Psychology of Consciousness,” and “Learning and Memory.” His research explores such diverse areas as the psychobiology of learning and memory, human causal reasoning, and cognition.
Additionally, Whitlow directs the SPARC (Science Preparation Alliance of Rutgers and Camden) program, which seeks to enhance science education for pre-college students, especially those in the City of Camden. The program sponsors an annual Allied Health Sciences Expo at Rutgers—Camden for area high school students.
The Rutgers—Camden scholar has earned numerous grants, including a five-year, $1.15 million grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to promote science literacy as a means to combat drug abuse among teens.
Whitlow received his bachelor’s degree in English and psychology from Macalester College in 1970. He earned his doctoral degree in psychology from Yale University in 1975. He has taught at Rutgers—Camden since 1979.
