Eagleton’s Nonpartisan Website Helps Voters Learn About Candidates, Issues

October 22, 2008

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – The Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is making it easy for voters to be informed about candidates, ballot questions and voting procedures through www.njvoterinfo.org, a website devoted to pubic affairs issues affecting New Jersey.

The candidates for president are well known, but candidates from New Jersey for the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives have received little public attention, according to Ingrid Reed, director of Eagleton’s New Jersey Project.

“Sample ballots now in the mail often raise questions about who is running,” says Reed. “New voters will find the site especially helpful if they are not familiar with their congressional districts and the candidates running in them.”

A click on www.njvoterinfo.org allows voters to:

·         Locate a congressional district by clicking on the home municipality

·         See photographs of candidates for Congress

·         Learn about the candidates running in their districts by checking biographical information and issue statements from the candidates

·         Check information about the presidential candidates and the candidates for U.S. Senate and link to their campaign web sites

·         Review the list of candidates running for county offices

·         Find out about the two New Jersey ballot questions

·         Learn how to get an absentee ballot

·         Link to a polling place locator

·         Connect to such other useful sites as the New Jersey Division of Elections, Project Vote Smart, the League of Women Voters of New Jersey and the political parties.

www.njvoterinfo.org furthers Eagleton’s mission to undertake projects that enhance political understanding and involvement, often in collaboration with political leaders, government agencies, the media, nonprofit groups and other academic institutions.
