Open House for Rutgers' School Nurse Certification Program on Jan. 28

January 22, 2009

For Immediate Release

CAMDEN --  A program at Rutgers University–Camden designed to help registered nurses earn their New Jersey school nurse certification on a quicker basis has been approved by the New Jersey Department of Education.

An open house for the Rutgers–Camden School Nurse Certification Program will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28.

The program will allow registered nurses with baccalaureate degrees to complete coursework and receive New Jersey state certification within seven months, instead of the average year and a half.  Classes will begin July 6.

Offered through the Rutgers–Camden College of Arts and Sciences, the program will provide comprehensive education and clinical experience in the basic New Jersey requirements for school nurses, while including additional emphasis on treating a diverse student population and implementing substance abuse prevention programs on the elementary and high school levels.  The Rutgers–Camden curriculum also will provide coursework to help school nurses deal with disasters and other emergencies.

According to program director Kathleen Frame, the demands on school nurses have changed radically during the past decade.  “Today’s schools require nurses who are sensitive to the needs of a diverse student population; who can help students fight substance abuse; and who can advise their principals on effective disaster planning,” says Frame.

The State of New Jersey requires certification for nurses employed in public schools.

Candidates for the Rutgers–Camden program are required to have a baccalaureate degree and New Jersey RN licensure.

The open house will be held in room 406 in Armitage Hall, located at 311 North Fifth Street on the Rutgers–Camden campus.  For more information, call (856) 225-6040.
