Rutgers–Camden Student's Marketing Savvy Earns Her a "Rising Star" Award
CAMDEN – Hainseport resident Melodie Shinn is positioned for success. So says the Philly Ad Club, which has named the undergraduate marketing major at the Rutgers School of Business—Camden a “Rising Star.”
Nominated by their professors, “Rising Stars” are outstanding students who are majoring in advertising, communications, journalism, marketing, or graphic design and are interested in pursuing a career in one of these areas. The 2009 winners were featured in the most recent edition of Ad News, published by the Philly Ad Club.
Shinn, 22, is no stranger to the spotlight. She vied for the 2009 Miss New Jersey title this fall and served as spokesperson for nonprofits like the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and SPCA, through her internship at MB and Associates Public Relations in Haddonfield.
Now in her senior year at the Rutgers–Camden business school, Shinn currently serves as a marketing assistant for Joan Glenn, CPA Financial Advisory in Stratford and an intern at Philadelphia Magazine. Her ideal job, she says, would be “to run [a] magazine empowering women.”
“It would be a dream come true to create a magazine that encourages women to do what many have encouraged me to do,” adds the 2005 Cherokee High School graduate.
Last semester, Shinn’s work with fellow classmates on a mock marketing campaign for Orangina brand soft drinks earned her group “Best Creative,” as well as an induction into an unofficial student “advertising hall of fame” at the Rutgers–Camden business school.
Julie Ruth, an associate professor of marketing at the Rutgers School of Business–Camden, nominated Shinn for the "Rising Star" award.
“Melodie has gained tremendous experience in landing several great marketing communications internships and jobs in the area. She has capitalized on those opportunities to continue to learn and grow,” Ruth says. “She has a bright future ahead of her in the field.”
