Rutgers–Camden Expert Available to Discuss Chinese New Year (Jan. 26)

The Year of the Ox begins on Monday, Jan. 26, when the Lunar New Year (also known as Chinese New Year) is celebrated.

Dr. Elizabeth VanderVen is an assistant professor of history at Rutgers University—Camden, and a research expert on Chinese and eastern Asian history and culture.  Her work appears in the “Encyclopedia of Modern Asia” (Charles Scribner’s Sons, 2002) and is presented regularly at conferences around the world. 

She can discuss:

  • New Year’s customs in urban and rural China
  • How the customs and importance of Chinese New Year have changed in recent years
  • The meanings of the various astrological signs related to each New Year (including 2009’s Year of the Ox)
