January 20, 2009

The text for the following press release is provided by the Office of the Governor.

Governor Jon S. Corzine announced that Chief Counsel Edward J. McBride Jr. CLaw '89 will be Chief of Staff for the Governor’s Office and will assume his new responsibilities immediately.

“As Chief Counsel, Ed has been an integral member of my administration, providing exceptional advice on an array of legislative, legal and policy issues,” said Governor Corzine. “I am pleased to have a person with a full range of experience, integrity, and dedication to public service to serve as my next chief of staff.”

McBride who resides in Pennsauken, Camden County, will manage the day-to-day operations of the Governor’s Office.  He is an attorney with over 20 years of experience in private practice in bench trials and litigation and representing a wide range of cases in labor and employment matters. He has authored numerous articles and book reviews and has served in state government for most of his career. In 1990 and until 1993 he was assistant counsel to Governor Jim Florio CLaw '67 where his responsibilities included drafting and monitoring legislation and providing legal and policy advice to the Governor on a wide range of subjects. In 2006 he became Deputy Chief Counsel to Governor Corzine and was named Chief Counsel to the Governor in February 2008.

Mc Bride obtained his Juris Doctor, with highest honors, from Rutgers School of Law-Camden in 1989. His civic service includes serving as a member of the Steering Committee of Ceasefire NJ; commissioner of Merchantville-Pennsauken Water Commission; solicitor of Pennsauken Sewerage Authority; coach and director of referees for Pennsauken Roller Hockey League; basketball coach for St. Stephen’s JV team; and parishioner and usher for Sacred Heart Church in Camden. He is married and the father of two sons.

“Bill has an exceptional legal mind and his years of service working in the legislature will be essential as we look to move forward with statewide economic relief and ethics reform initiatives in the coming year,” said Corzine.
