Rutgers–Camden Recognizes Anniversary of Children’s Rights with Lecture Series

February 23, 2009

CAMDEN – A “Children and Rights” lecture series at Rutgers University’s Camden Campus will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

All events will take place from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on the Rutgers–Camden Campus.

Thursday, March 5

 “The Rights of Children in the Juvenile Justice System” will be discussed by panelists JC Lore and Sandra Simkins, clinical associate professors at the Rutgers School of Law—Camden, where they co-direct the Children’s Justice Clinic. They will be joined by attorney Lourdes Rosado of the Juvenile Law Center in Philadelphia.

This panel discussion will take place in room 403 of the east wing of the Rutgers–Camden law school, located at Fifth Street, between Cooper Street and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge on the Rutgers–Camden Campus.

Monday, March 23

“When a Child is Alone: The Rights of Unaccompanied Immigrant Children” will be discussed by panelists Ilze Earner, an assistant professor at Hunter College’s School of Social Work, and  Kaitlin Lord, a community resource developer at Lutheran Child and Family Services in Philadelphia. Additional commentary will be offered by a young person who deals with these issues. 

This panel discussion will take place in Conference Room South AB of the Campus Center, located on Third Street, between Cooper Street and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge on the Rutgers–Camden Campus.

Wednesday, April 1

Issues concerning children in foster care will be presented during the panel discussion “Children in Foster Care: Rights, Reality, and Remedies.” Panelists include Frank P. Cervone, executive director of the Support Center for Child Advocates; Erin O’Leary, director of legal affairs for the New Jersey Department of Children and Families; and Meredith Schalick, visiting clinical assistant professor at the Rutgers–Camden law school.

This panel discussion will take place in room 103 of the west wing of the Rutgers–Camden law school. The building is located on Fifth Street, between Cooper Street and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge on the Rutgers–Camden Campus.

Thursday, April 16

Barbara Woodhouse, the David H. Levin Chair in Family Law at the University of Florida’s College of Law, where she directs the Center for Children and Families, will discuss “The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Children.”



This lecture will take place in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Campus Center. The building is located on Third Street, between Cooper Street and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge on the Rutgers–Camden Campus.

In 2007, Rutgers–Camden launched the nation’s very first PhD program in childhood studies. The innovative doctoral program will enrich professional careers and outcomes in education, higher education, early childhood, children’s literature, research, and public policy.

The Camden Campus of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, offers 34 undergraduate and 17 master’s- and PhD-level programs.
