Rutgers–Camden to Host Free International Conference on Children and War in April
CAMDEN - Top scholars from around the world will share their newest insights regarding the impact of war and armed conflict on children during a free conference at Rutgers University–Camden Friday, April 3 through Sunday, April 5.
“Rutgers–Camden has always been committed to contributing to the national and international discourse on the state of children and childhood both at home and internationally,” says Lynn Vallone, professor of childhood studies at Rutgers–Camden and conference organizer. “The roles children play, and have played, during wartime is a topic that cries out for historicizing and in-depth investigation.”
Sponsored by the Rutgers–Camden Department of Childhood Studies, the conference will feature keynote addresses from Ishmael Beah, author of the book A Long Way Gone: Memoir of a Boy Soldier, and Michael Wessells, author of Child Soldiers: From Violence to Protection.
In addition, international scholars from various disciplines will present their latest research during panel discussions such as “War and African Children,” “Trauma and Resilience,” and “War and Children’s Rights.”
“Children and War” will take place at both the Sheraton Society Hill in Philadelphia and on the Rutgers–Camden Campus, home of the nation’s first PhD program in childhood studies.
