Rutgers-Camden History Lecture Series Offers Sneak Peek into Emerging Research

CAMDEN – Regional scholars will gather at Rutgers–Camden to present their works-in-progress during the 2009-10 Lees History Seminar Series. This annual lecture series, which is free and open to the public, allows a sneak peek into emerging research, with topics ranging from the United States machine tools industry to the origins of emergency contraception.

An endowment from Andrew Lees, a distinguished professor of history at Rutgers–Camden, supports the series, which will take place at 4:30 p.m. on select Fridays in the faculty lounge on the third floor of Armitage Hall. The building is located on Fifth Street, between Cooper Street and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge on the Rutgers–Camden Campus.

Oct. 23
Phil Scranton, a professor of history at Rutgers–Camden, will discuss "The Shows and the Flows: Materials, Markets, and Innovation in the US Machine Tools Industry, 1945-1965." Nathan Ensmegenger, an assistant professor of history and sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, will serve as commentator.

Nov. 19
Elizabeth Vanderven, an assistant professor of history at Rutgers–Camden, will present "Village Schools in Northeast China, 1905-1931." Colette Plum, an assistant professor of history at Widener University, will serve as commentator.

Feb. 19
Janet Lindman, an associate professor of history at Rowan University, will present “Women's Friendships in Early America.” Andrew Shankman, an associate professor of history at Rutgers–Camden, will serve as commentator. 

March 26
Heather Munro Prescott, a professor of history at Central Connecticut State University, will discuss “Courageous Volunteers:  The Origins of Emergency Contraception in the United States during the 1960s.” Cindy Connolly, an associate professor of nursing at the University of Pennsylvania, will serve as commentator.

April 23
Lorrin Thomas, an assistant professor of history at Rutgers–Camden, will discuss “The Seventies, Donde Estan? Tracing an Era across the Americas." Tom Sugrue, the Edmund J. and Louise W. Kahn Professor of History and Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, will serve as commentator.

The Lees History Seminars launched on Sept. 11 with Adele Lindenmeyr of Villanova University discussing “Philanthropy, Feminism, and Friendship: Countess Sofia V. Panina and Social Reform in Russia, 1891-1914."
