Sounds Of Music Will Be Heard at Rutgers University, Newark

2009/2010 Campus Concert Series gets Underway

(Newark, N.J., Sept. 23, 2009) -- Great jazz, classical or choral concerts and dance performances are closer than you might think. Rutgers University in Newark has announced its fall 2009/spring 2010 concert schedule. All campus concerts and performances are open to the public free of charge.

Nov. 19, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m., The Art in Music,”  a musical celebration of the Paul Robeson Galleries 30th anniversary, featuring works by Gershwin, Hindemith, Varèse and the world premiere of Rutgers Professor Henry Martin’s “A Gershwin Mosaic.”  Performed by Asmira Woodward-Page, violin, and friends.

DANCE EVENTS ON CAMPUS

Nov. 9 -10, Dance As Community Identity: A Symposium on North African Dance

Talks, a concert and a dance workshop, scheduled over two days in three locations

  • Nov. 9, 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m., Dana Room, John Cotton Dana Library, 185 University Ave., dance scholar Morocco will speak on Dance As Community Identity in Selected Berber Nations of Morocco, followed by dance scholar Amel Tafsout’s discussion, Body Art: Symbols, Henna and Tattoos in the Maghreb.
  • Nov. 9, 7:30 p.m., Bradley Hall Theatre, 110 Warren St. Dance performances by guest artists and other professional dancers. A reception will follow, in Bradley Hall Theatre lobby, featuring Middle Eastern/North African cuisine.
  • Nov. 10, noon-4 p.m., Paul Robeson Campus Center, 3rd floor Dance Studio, a dance workshop, Dance As Community Identity: A Symposium on North African Dance and Culture, featuring the dance scholars Amel Tafsout and Morocco. Information: mpierson@andromeda.rutgers.edu or ltroiano@rutgers.edu

BY MASS TRANSIT: Rutgers-Newark can be reached by New Jersey Transit buses and trains, the PATH train and Amtrak from New York City, and by the Newark Light Rail, Washington Street Station or Broad Street Station.

 BY CAR: Rutgers-Newark can be reached by the Garden State Parkway, New Jersey Turnpike, Routes 95, 21, 78, and 280, and the Lincoln and Holland tunnels. Metered parking is available on University Avenue. Other parking: Rutgers-Newark’s parking garage (200 University Ave.) or the Bradley Hall Lot.
