Art for Your Ears: New Electro-acoustic Series Amplifies Rutgers-Camden Art Exhibit
CAMDEN – Enrich your auditory (and art) senses with a lunchtime installation series that amplifies the topic of women and identity at the Rutgers–Camden Center for the Arts this November.
At 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Nov. 3-24, “Sounds from the Weave” will feature original electro-acoustic creations that complement the ongoing exhibit “A Complex Weave: Women and Identity in Contemporary Art.”
According to Mark Zaki, an assistant professor of music at Rutgers–Camden, where he directs the Rutgers Electro-Acoustic Lab, the 33 selected works by women composers the world over range from serious concert music to more experimental sound art.
“Our call for works was very successful. The idea was to parallel the mission of the current exhibit that deals with women artists’ interaction with identity,” notes Zaki of the installation that yielded 109 submissions from composers from 18 countries. “The compositions we’ll play on the gallery sound system will address various topics from a feminist viewpoint, including identification and gender complexities as well as relationships with politics, religion, and social hierarchy.”
“A Complex Weave: Women and Identity in Contemporary Art” will extend through Dec. 18 in the Stedman Gallery on the Rutgers–Camden Campus, which is the inaugural site for the exhibit’s national tour. This represents the first time that a prominent national art tour will originate from Rutgers–Camden.
The Stedman Gallery is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and until 8 p.m. on Thursdays. On select Sundays, Oct. 18; Nov. 1; Nov. 15; and Dec. 6, the gallery also will be open.
The Stedman Gallery is located in the Fine Arts Complex on Third Street, between Cooper Street and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge on the Rutgers–Camden Campus.
