Supreme Court and Religious Freedom (Rutgers-Camden Expert)
On Wednesday, Oct. 7, the U.S. Supreme Court heard a case exploring the role of religious imagery on federal grounds as a crucifix intended by the VFW to memorialize World War I soldiers has become a flashpoint for debate about religious freedoms due to its location on government grounds in Death Valley.
PERRY DANE is a professor at the Rutgers School of Law–Camden, where he currently teaches classes in “Religion and the Law” and “The Canadian Legal System.” His research scrutinizes the intersection of religion and the law. A former clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice William Brennan, Perry can provide an inside perspective on the workings of the Court. He is the author of the chapter “Constitutional Law and Religion” in A Companion to the Philosophy of Law and Legal Theory (second ed., Blackwell, 2009).
