Rutgers-Newark Expert Can Discuss the Role Haiti’s Economy Played in Disaster, Its Impact on Recovery; Earthquake Expert Available To Discuss Quake

NEWARK, NJ – As the international community rallies to aid Haitians following Tuesday’s disastrous quake, a professor at Rutgers University, Newark, is available to discuss the economic and political situation in Haiti, while a Rutgers-Newark geologist, an expert on earthquakes, can explain what caused the quake and why it was so damaging.

CARLOS SEIGLIE, a professor of economics, is also deputy director of the Rutgers Division of Global Affairs. He has expertise in topics as diverse as economic reform and defense economics, and has consulted with the Defense Department on Latin American politics and economics.

ALEXANDER GATES, chair of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, is co-author of the "Encyclopedia of Earthquakes and Volcanoes New Edition" (Facts-on-File Inc., third edition, 2006).  His areas of special interest are faults and fault processes, including the generation of earthquakes. Dr. Gates commonly appears as an invited expert on earthquakes in newspapers, the evening news and on documentaries.
