NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – At its regular meeting today, The Board of Governors of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, has established tuition, fee, and room and board rates for the 2009-10 academic year. Tuition and mandatory fees for all in-state undergraduate students will rise by 3.0 percent under the plan approved by the board.

The board also announced that it is allocating an additional $2.0 million in student financial aid to ensure that Rutgers remains accessible to a broad range of New Jersey residents. Increased state funding for the Tuition Aid Grant (TAG) program and rising federal support for the Pell Grant program also will help thousands of Rutgers students and their families.

“The ongoing economic recession has created significant financial challenges for our state, our university and our students,” said M. William Howard Jr., chair of the Board of Governors. “We believe, however, that the tuition and fee rates adopted today, along with a budget that includes additional student financial aid, will help maintain the quality, accessibility and affordability of a Rutgers education in the new academic year.”

As a result of the Board of Governors action, a typical in-state undergraduate attending the School of Arts and Sciences on Rutgers’ New Brunswick Campus will pay $9,546 in tuition and $2,340 in mandatory student fees in 2009-10. Compared to the costs paid by a similar student last year, annual tuition will increase by $278 (3.0%), while mandatory fees will increase by $68 (3.0%).  If living on campus, such a student will also see a 4.4% increase in housing and dining rates. Specific tuition, fee, room and board charges may vary across the university’s campuses, schools and colleges.

Established in 1766, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is America’s eighth oldest institution of higher learning and one of the nation’s premier public research universities.

Serving more than 50,000 students on campuses in Camden, Newark and New Brunswick, Rutgers offers more than 280 bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral and professional degree programs. The university is home to 27 degree-granting schools and colleges, and more than 150 specialized centers and institutes.
