The board also announced that it is allocating an additional $3.5 million in student financial aid to ensure that Rutgers remains accessible to a broad range of New Jersey residents. This increase in institutional student aid is essential in light of reduced state funding for the Tuition Aid Grant (TAG) and Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) programs that assist thousands of Rutgers students each year.
In developing its spending priorities and tuition rates for the coming year, the Board of Governors was required to address a significant cut in direct state operating funds for Rutgers in 2010-11, which will leave the university with its lowest level of state appropriation since the 1993-94 fiscal year.
“The recent economic recession has severely limited state government’s ability to provide adequate funding for New Jersey’s public colleges and universities, and has exacerbated a long-term trend in declining state support for higher education in the Garden State,” said Richard L. McCormick, university president. “This year’s difficult budget situation will require all members of the Rutgers community to work together to maintain our commitments to high-quality teaching, research, and service to the people of New Jersey.”
As a result of the Board of Governors action, a typical in-state, full-time, Arts and Science undergraduate on the New Brunswick/Piscataway campus will pay $9,926 in tuition and $2,633 in mandatory student fees in 2010-11. For such a student living on campus, room charges will be $6,836 in 2010-11, while a meal plan will be $4,070. Compared to last year, annual tuition will increase by 4.0% for this student, while total costs (tuition, fees, room and board) will increase by 5.4%.
