Rutgers Offers Summer Arts, Academic and Sports Camp Programs for Kids

NEW BRUNSWICK – A summer of learning and fun is in store for young people in interest areas ranging from the arts to academics, and sports to adventure camp programs. Rutgers offers a selection of summer camp programs to satisfy a wide variety of interests and abilities.

Registration is underway for many programs. Check program websites for complete information, registration dates, fees and deadlines.

Performing and Visual Arts

The Zimmerli Art Museum and Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers offer programs that cater to young people’s interests and talents in art, music, dance and theater.

Zimmerli Art Museum

Zimmerli Summer Art Camp, June 24-July 26: During the hot days of summer, the Zimmerli is a cool place for young artists, ages 7 to 14. The popular summer art camp program features classes in painting drawing and sculpture as well as gallery tours. Fee: $175 weekly per child for each workshop for nonmembers; $135 for members.

Mason Gross School of the Arts

Rutgers Summer Band and Orchestra Camp, July 21-26:  Youths from 13 to18 can experience week of intense orchestra and band training with renowned professional musicians and leading music educators. Fees:  $750 for residential program; $450 for commuters.  A limited number of scholarships are available for All-State ensemble members.

The 2013 Rutgers Summer Jazz Institute presents The Jazz/Fusion Workshop, July 7-12: The institute is ideal for young musicians, ages 13-18, interested in improving their jazz improvisation, small group, and large ensemble skills. Students work intensively in daily rehearsals with the internationally renowned, award-winning jazz faculty of the Mason Gross School of the Arts. Fees: resident :$875; commuter: $550. 

Rutgers Design Camp, July 8-19, ages 14-18: This day camp develops skills in graphic design using Adobe programs for motivated high school artists Two levels are offered for those with beginner and intermediate skills in these programs.  Fee: $700, includes materials; trip to New York City. 

Nikolais/Louis Summer Dance Intensive, July 15-19: Day program for professional and pre-professional dancers, ages 16 and up. Fees:  $400 before May 10; $475 after May 10. 

Rutgers Dance Camp, July 21-26, and July 28-August 2: Spend a week immersed in dance. Open to new and experienced dancers ages 12 to 15, who wish to expand their knowledge and experience in a collegiate environment. Fees:  resident: $1,050; commuter: $650. 

Rutgers Summer Dance Conservatory, July 21-August 2:  An intensive, pre-college program for experienced dancers ages 15 to 18, who seek to build artistic acuity and technical endurance, while gaining information about pursuing a career in dance through college study. Fees: resident: $2,250; commuter: $1,350. 

Kids Create, August 5-9 and 12-16: Children, ages 6-12, develop their imaginations and skills through drawing, painting, collage, movement, music, improvisational theater, creative dramatics, and playwriting. Fees: $365 for one session, $680 for both. Sibling discount of $50.

Rutgers Summer Acting Conservatory, June 30 to July 28. Conservatory training for young people serious about acting. Students ages 14 -18 may apply.  Competitive financial aid available, early application is encouraged. Fees: resident: $4,750; commuter: $3,500.

Academics

Young Scholars Program in Discrete Mathematics, July 1-26: The Rutgers Young Scholars Program in Discrete Mathematics for mathematically talented high school students provides a mathematically rich environment to high school students interested in mathematics, and is designed to encourage them to consider careers in the mathematical sciences. Students are in residence on campus Monday through Friday; students return home each weekend; or may arrange to spend weekends at homes of local participants. Fee: $3,500; tuition, materials, room and board.

TARGET, July 1-19: The Academy at Rutgers for Girls in Engineering and Technology is designed for middle school and high school girls to increase awareness and familiarize them with career opportunities in engineering. Each weekly session is geared to a different grade level. Fee: $300 for each week except the first, which is $240 due to the shortened holiday week.

Summer Reading Program for Children and Adults, June through August, one day a week for five-week sessions. Offered by Rutgers’ Division of Continuing Studies in partnership with the Institute of Reading Development. Programs for pre-kindergarten through adults are taught at 20 locations throughout the state. Age-appropriate instruction ranges from phonics and reading readiness through comprehension, retention and vocabulary building. Fees: $249 or $329 plus materials, depending on level. Sports and Recreation

Scarlet Knights Sports Camps, June through August: Rutgers coaches teach summer camp programs in soccer, football and basketball. Programs also are available in baseball, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, tennis, field hockey, rowing, wrestling, swimming and volleyball. Fees and times vary. Rutgers Recreation, June through August: Rutgers Recreation offers a wide range of classes and trips for children throughout the year. Summer offerings include Learn to Row, Scarlet Swim, New Horizons Day Camps, and Adventure Camp. Dates, fees and times vary.  An open house is slated for Saturday, March 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Cook/Douglass Recreation Center.
