CAMDEN — A group of 30 business-minded high school seniors are learning what it takes to become innovative entrepreneurs during the annual summer BizEd program at the Rutgers School of Business–Camden.
This year’s program, titled “Building Business Leaders,” is a two-week summer camp designed to prepare a select group of students for the rigors of collegiate business education. From July 9 to 18, students from across New Jersey will be introduced to the theory and practice of accounting, finance, management, marketing, and technology. The camp is designed to spark creativity and develop decision-making skills.
“This program provides a balanced view of business education that is lacking in most of the nation’s high schools,” says Jaishankar Ganesh, dean of the Rutgers School of Business–Camden. “BizEd is a creative way to better prepare teenagers for success in college and throughout their lives.”
This summer marks the 12th anniversary of the BizEd camp. Since 2001, more than 350 of the state’s top high school students have gone through the program, each working closely with Rutgers–Camden business scholars and area business leaders offering career guidance and up-to-the minute insights regarding current job, business, and economic trends.
Over the course of the program, the high school students tour local businesses such as the Garden State Discovery Museum in Cherry Hill; work in teams to produce a TV advertisement; and apply knowledge gained from the program to a business case competition, during which they present a strategy to resolve a real-life business issue.
Upon completing the program, each student will receive certification of his or her participation.
Later this month, Rutgers–Camden will for the second straight year host high school juniors during an additional BizEd session titled “Building the Best ‘You’ for Business.” The program for juniors runs July 23 to 31.
