Board honors World Cup soccer champion Carli Lloyd, inducts new members

The following are news and developments from the July 16, 2015, Rutgers Board of Governors meeting:

Board of Governors Honors Carli Lloyd
The board adopted a resolution recognizing the achievements of World Cup soccer champion Carli Lloyd, a 2006 Rutgers graduate. In the World Cup finals, Lloyd scored three goals in 16 minutes against Japan, becoming the fastest player of any gender to score a hat trick in FIFA World Cup history. She was awarded FIFA’s Golden Ball Trophy as the World Cup’s top player for her historic performance.

While at Rutgers, Lloyd was a four-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) all-region and two-time NSCAA All-American player. She was inducted into the Rutgers Hall of Distinguished Alumni in 2013.


Board of Governors Inducts New Members

Joseph M. Rigby is chair, president and chief executive officer of Pepco Holdings Inc. (PHI), a regional energy holding company that provides utility service to about 2 million customers. He joins the board as a public governor appointed by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and confirmed by the state Senate. Rigby graduated from the Rutgers University-Camden College of Arts and Sciences in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and is a member of the school’s executive advisory board. Sandy J. Stewart, past chair of the Rutgers Board of Trustees and an alumnus of the university, will serve as a trustee governor through 2021. He was also elected to the Rutgers University-Camden Board of Directors. Stewart, who earned a Bachelor of Arts from Rutgers-Camden’s College of Arts and Sciences in 1981 and a Master of Science from the Graduate School at Rutgers-Camden in 1987, is also a member of the Rutgers University Foundation’s Board of Overseers and the Rutgers University-Camden Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Leadership Council. Board Approves 2.3 Percent Tuition and Fee Increase
The Board approved tuition and fee increases of 2.3 percent for the 2015-16 academic year, as well as a 3.2 percent increase in financial aid grants for students.

Tuition and mandatory fees for a typical in-state undergraduate student will rise by 2.3 percent under the plan approved by the board, less than the university’s average increase over the past four years. During that period, tuition and fee increases – which ranged from 2.4 percent to 2.6 percent at Rutgers University-Camden, Rutgers University-Newark and Rutgers University-New Brunswick – all ranked among the lowest for their respective peer groups.
