Statement by Richard L. McCormick, President of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey re: Final Approval of State Budget

This year’s long and arduous budget-making process ended today with Gov. Corzine signing the fiscal year 2009 spending plan. Rutgers realizes the extraordinary fiscal challenges faced by the state and the people of New Jersey and we commend Gov. Corzine’s steadfast determination to put the state on the road to financial stability.

This budget will require significant sacrifice by institutions throughout the state, including Rutgers and New Jersey’s other public colleges and universities.

As we work to finalize the Rutgers fiscal year 2009 budget, we will review our state budget allocation in detail and determine what we must do to protect and advance our academic, research and service priorities. We will continue to aggressively pursue opportunities to streamline operations, reduce costs and develop alternative sources of funding.

We know some very difficult decisions lie ahead, but I have every confidence in the dedication and remarkable resolve of the students, faculty and staff of our university community to meet the challenges of the coming year and maintain Rutgers’ commitment to excellence in all that we do.
