Renowned sports memorabilia collector fostered love of baseball on Rutgers–Camden playing fields

Garland Miller
CAMDEN — If you browse through Rutgers–Camden’s athletics archives, Garland “Gar” Miller’s name is sure to surface quite a few times.

The standout pitcher held the school’s all-time baseball program record for career victories for 45 years before it was broken in 2005. Miller still holds the career mark with 19 complete games and ranks high on the career list in innings pitched, strikeouts and shutouts 50 years after he graduated.

The Golden Raptor, who also has a no-hitter to his credit, fondly recalls his time as a student and athlete at Rutgers University–Camden.

“We practiced on a sandlot littered with stones,” remembers Miller, who graduated from Rutgers–Camden in 1960. “What a thrill it must be for the team to play at Campbell’s Field now.”

A Wenonah resident, Miller was inducted into the Rutgers–Camden Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005. With Miller on the mound, the Rutgers–Camden baseball team shared the Delaware Valley Conference championship in 1957 and won it outright in 1959 and 1960. Miller also played basketball for four seasons.

gh his playing days are behind him, Miller still is surrounded by baseball. He is a nationally-recognized sports memorabilia collector who wrote the first How to Collect book on baseball cards.

“That book was published in 1973 and included the first-ever published price guide for baseball cards,” says Miller, who currently sells cards from his extensive collection on his website, garmillercards.com.

Miller, a former editor and communications manager at Atlantic Richfield Company, majored in liberal arts at Rutgers–Camden, where he met wife Rhoda Ann.

He remembers many aspects of student life and says he was one of the first students to live on campus.

“I lived at 305 Cooper Street, right next to where the chancellor’s office is now,” Miller recalls.

It’s been 50 years since Miller graduated from Rutgers–Camden and he has been selected as one of this year’s Golden Raptors. Launched in 2005, the Golden Raptor program honors select Rutgers–Camden graduates celebrating their 50th anniversary as alumni.

As part of the honor, Miller will walk with the Class of 2010 during the commencement ceremony for Rutgers–Camden College of Arts and Sciences on May 24.
